McMaster will take over more than 50,000 square feet of space at 1 James Street North in downtown Hamilton. The move will allow 200 staff and 4,000 students to remain in the city's core. Staff had the opportunity to tour the facility at an open house held Friday.

McMaster staff located in downtown Hamilton toured their future home at 1 James Street North Friday.

Staff in Financial Affairs, Institutional Research and Analysis, University Advancement and the Centre for Continuing Education will move into the building in 2015.

Next year’s move will allow 200 staff and 4,000 students to remain in the city’s core.

McMaster has been contributing to the vibrancy of the downtown core for the past 13 years via the University’s current Downtown Centre. The building, located on Main Street East between John and Hughson, is owned by the City of Hamilton, which now requires the space for its own purposes.

The University is leasing the entire building at 1 James Street North, which is part of the Jackson Square retail and office complex. The new location is easily accessed by public transit, offers ample parking nearby and is in close proximity to a wide array of services and amenities.

It’s also just two blocks away from McMaster’s new Downtown Health Campus, which is currently under construction at the corner of Main Street West and Bay Street North, and just two blocks from the current Downtown Centre location.
