But since it's inception in 2000, the annual Soulfood Fair has been concerned with more than just the heart; it aims to promote the healthy balance of the body, mind and spirit.

This year, the Soulfood Fair is entitled Stepping Stones. “The theme,” says Carol Wood, ecumenical chaplain and chair of the Soulfood Organizing Committee, “reminds us that health is an incremental process. We need to take steps daily and weekly to achieve health of our body, mind and spirit.”

Individuals will find the fair a relaxing, nurturing experience, says Wood. Throughout the day, music will accompany attendees as they browse through 20 exhibitors showcasing yoga and pilates instruction, naturopathic medicine, health foods, tropical plants, knitting and scrapbooking, among others. Participants can also register for workshops, such as knitting, scrapbooking, Tai Chi, drumming, pilates and chiropractic. There also will be dance performances, demonstrations and an exhibit fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the common theme of balancing spiritual and physical health and well being for all students, staff and faculty in the McMaster community. Hospitality Services has also donated free hot chocolate to be served during the fair. In addition, Athletics & Recreation will host its 'Soul Day @ The Pulse'.

The hope is that those who attend will find an opportunity to relax from the daily rigours of work or school. With more than 1,400 attendees last year, the goal is to reach more people with the message of leading a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Soulfood Fair is a collaborative effort, made possible by contributions from the Centre for Student Development, Campus Health (Health/Wellness), Athletics and Recreation, Chaplaincy, the International Student's Office, Indigenous Studies, Office of Part Time Studies and Working at McMaster.

The Fair will be held in the McMaster University Student Centre Marketplace on Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Workshop registration is available on the Soulfood Fair website. Visit http://csd.mcmaster.ca/soulfood/ for more information.
