Tryon and Shulman choose to perform works by particular composers of note for their significant addition to the rich tapestry of classical music.

Shulman teams up with Tryon to create a flute and piano ensemble that can only be described as magnificent. Shulman is a flute instructor at McMaster and Tryon is a piano instructor as well as a former McMaster artist in residence.

On the whole, these female composers were prolific in spite of tremendous struggles to both compose their music amid family obligations and societal pressures against working women. In particular, some women featured in this concert led lives eclipsed by the careers of their composer husbands, as was the case with Clara Shumann. Others such as Mel Bonis and Lili Boulanger, were plagued by personal tragedy that stunted their musical abilities. Featured composers such as Cecile Chaminade, Margaret Cornils and Germaine Tailleferre also left behind a rich legacy that is sure to inspire woman composers from all musical genres today. Don't miss this rare treat.

The School of the Arts is very fortunate to have two such revered artists. Come early to ensure a seat at this memorable performance on March 28 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Convocation Hall (UH 213). Admission is free.
