Senior Prom, a perfect GPA and putting the ‘men’ in menopause

McMaster is known for making a positive impact on the local, national and international stages. Each week, The Office of Public Relations highlights a few of the many McMaster stories making the news.

Convocation:

CBC Hamilton, CBC TV Toronto (story begins at 27:40 at the link) and Yahoo! News Canada reported on the Del Bello family, where father Gabe Del Bello, now 49, graduated last week on the same day as his son, Johnny (both in Political Science) and only three days after Gabe’s daughter Alex had graduated in Art History. Gabe had come within one three-unit course of graduating before his mother died and he had to go to work to support his family.

The Hamilton Spectator published a condensed version of President Patrick Deane’s Convocation address.

The Hamilton Spectator published a story about graduating student El Hassan Abdel Fattah (Mechanical Engineering) who had come to Canada from Sharjah and travelled widely for his co-op studies before graduating with a perfect grade-point average and accepting a job in Hamilton.

The Hamilton Spectator reported on the success of Amanda De Melo, who graduated in English and Religious Studies after enduring a double-lung transplant and other challenges related to cystic fibrosis.

Community engagement:
The Windsor Star published a story about Alex Gow, who recently graduated from McMaster’s MD program, joining a family medical practice in an underserved part of Essex County.

The Toronto Star published a feature about the Senior Prom, an event to celebrate the lives of Holocaust survivors, created by McMaster graduate Elise Kayfetz (Gerontology) whose  Master’s thesis had focused on the impact of the Holocaust on survivors and how to best care for them.

The Wall Street Journal asked Karen Beattie (Rheumatology) about the effects of strontium citrate on osteoporosis.
