Security Services investigating thefts from residence

McMaster University Security Services are investigating thefts from residence buildings over the Labour Day weekend. Reported thefts included computers and other electronic equipment stolen from residence rooms. These thefts occurred when several of the rooms were left unlocked and unattended.

Such events raise considerable concern for the University community. McMaster Security Services strive to maintain a safe and secure environment, thus aiding self-development and higher education. Security Services need all occupants of McMaster University to work together in order to prevent similar events and to detect those responsible for criminal activity. The first step is to keep offices and rooms secure at all times, particularly when you are away. This includes when you are intending to leave your premises for only a few seconds.

Most thefts on campus are as a result of crimes of opportunity. If the opportunity is eliminated, the amount of thefts on campus would drastically decrease. It is very tempting for an individual to observe computers, textbooks and other personal items left unattended, compelling them to take the belongings.

McMaster Security Services have a staff of 10 civilian members and 20 Special Constables. The officers are sworn Peace Officers appointed under the Ontario Police Services Act and are responsible for enforcing the law on campus through Federal and Provincial Statutes, Municipal By-laws and University Regulations. McMaster Security Officers have the ability to conduct investigations and make arrests and to file charges in the same manner as a Police Officer.

If you have any information regarding these or any other criminal acts notify Security Services at 905-525-9140 ext. 24281 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Working together we can help prevent crime. In every crime there is a victim and without awareness and diligence the next victim may be you.
