With fuel consumption at 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres, the vehicle uses less gas and produces fewer emissions than a non-hybrid.
“As gas prices rise, we have to constantly rethink how we do business at McMaster in providing a safe and secure campus,” said sergeant Bill Watts. “At the same time, a goal within Security Services is that we have to leave less of an environmental footprint as we patrol 24/7.”
When idling, the hybrid's engine runs on electric power and is barely audible. The vehicle is capable of reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h on battery power before switching to the gas engine. The vehicle can also run on a combination of electric and gasoline power.
Regenerative braking recharges the batteries when the vehicle brakes or decelerates.
To further reduce its environmental footprint, Security Services officers will also be patrolling the campus on bicycles when the weather permits.
“Universities are innovative institutions, and we should be demonstrating that in the vehicles we purchase,” said Terry Sullivan, director of Security and Parking Services, adding that he hopes the Ford Escape will familiarize students with hybrids, making them more likely to purchase one of their own.
Facility Services is also going green with electric golf carts.
