Science in the City lecture features international development expert

[img_inline align=”right” src=”http://padnws01.mcmaster.ca/images/malone.jpg” caption=”Canadian scholar-diplomat David Malone, president of the IDRC, is giving a free public lecture on October 13 at 7 p.m.”]David Malone, president of Canada's International Development Research Centre – one of the world's leading institutions in the generation and application of new knowledge to meet the challenges facing developing countries – will speak at the next Science in the City public lecture on Tuesday, October 13.

A career foreign service officer and occasional scholar, Malone's career has spanned the globe, haveing served as Canada's High Commissioner to India and non-resident ambassador to Bhutan and Nepal, to holding positions as president of the Peace Academy (New York), ambassador and deputy permanent representative of Canada to the United Nations, and various posts with the federal government.

Malone will be speaking about the The Vital Importance of Context, a talk that will roam across subject areas to highlight the importance of specificity in research and the need for extreme caution in offering or entertaining generalizations.

Malone will focus on issues of agricultural productivity and water management, but also on cases relevant to peace and security. He will draw on examples in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Malone's lecture is the inaugural lecture of a joint distinguished lecture series sponsored by the United Nations University International Network on Water, Environment and Health and the McMaster Institute of Environment and Health.
