Schunemann appointed Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics chair

Photo courtesy of FHS. “]Dr. Holger Schunemann, a leader in evidence-based clinical practice and guideline development, has been appointed chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

He is currently a part-time professor in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CE&B) and an associate professor of medicine at the University at Buffalo.

Schunemann begins his new role at McMaster on Feb. 1, 2009, coming from the Italian National Cancer Institute where he is the chief of the Clinical Research Development and Information Translation (INFORMA) Unit.

As the new chair of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics, Schunemann will hold the endowed Michael Gent Chair in Healthcare Research. He will also have a joint appointment in McMaster's Department of Medicine.

Professor Kathryn Bennett has been acting chair of CE&B since Brian Haynes' retirement from the position in June.

Since 2001, Schunemann has been a member of McMaster's Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, where he teaches in the Health Research Methodology program, supervises graduate students and is a member of the CLARITY group.

His research interests focus on guideline development, systematic reviews and health-related quality of life. He has authored and co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles, book chapters and books.

In addition to his research activities, Schunemann maintains a clinical practice in preventive medicine and public health.

In 2006, he served as the chair of the World Health Organization's Rapid Advice Guidelines on pharmacological management of avian influenza. He has served as a member of grant review panels for the National Institutes of Health, the European Union, the Italian Drug Agency and the German Ministry of Education and Research.

A graduate of the University of Hannover's medical school in Germany, Schunemann also earned his M.Sc. in epidemiology and PhD in epidemiology and community health at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.
