Renting vs. buying, the 7-minute workout and the world’s oldest water

McMaster is known for making a positive impact on the local, national and international stages. Each week, The Office of Public Relations highlights a few of the many McMaster stories making the news.

Research:
The Globe and Mail published a half-page feature (with a separate video on its website) on the Biointerfaces Institute, including an interview with its director, John Brennan. The feature – part of the paper’s “Breakthrough” series — described the new facility, including its partnerships with industry and its potential to assist students.

CBC Radio’s Metro Morning and Ontario Morning, CBC TV Maritimes,  The Toronto Star, Waterloo Region Record, CBC Radio Syndication (with interviews appearing in Thunder Bay, Yellowknife, Kitchener, Sudbury, London and Gander) all interviewed Martin Gibala (Kinesiology) about the benefits of high-intensity interval training. His research was also the subject of an editorial in the Globe and Mail.

Al Jazeera, CBC News Network, The Hamilton Spectator and CBC.ca reported on the involvement of McMaster’s Greg Slater (Geography and Earth Sciences) in the discovery of the oldest known flowing water on Earth.

The Windsor Star continued previous coverage of research by Brenda Vrkljan (Rehabilitation Science) into seniors driving.

Teaching, learning and student success:
The Globe and Mail published a story on the rising demand for experiential learning opportunities for students everywhere, citing McMaster’s Humanities Target Learning and Experiential Education Centre, quoting (and photographing) the centre’s Lisa Bifano, a graduating student.

The Globe and Mail published a story about the way Frank Tristani (DeGroote School of Business) teaches his finance students to analyze whether a person is better off renting or buying a home over a 25-year period, arriving at some surprising and provocative conclusions. Tristani also appeared live on CFRB radio in Toronto.

Expert opinion:
TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin featured Dean of Social Sciences Charlotte Yates on a panel about the middle class.

CTV News Channel interviewed Manish Kacker (DeGroote School of Business) from McMaster’s campus studio on the subject of Facebook’s IPO, one year later. Ron Balvers (DeGroote School of Business) talked to 900 CHML-AM about the same subject.

Global TV News talked to John Connolly (Humanities) about brain cognition.

The Hamilton Spectator tapped Marvin Gunderman (Biology) for a story about the wave of cicadas expected to emerge across much of the U.S. this summer.

Feature story:
The Guardian’s higher education blog carried a lengthy feature on university fundraising in Canada, one that focused primarily and positively on McMaster, including interviews with Lorna Somers (Development) and John Kelton (Health Sciences).
