Milestones are an important part of any journey. They reaffirm the notion that strong efforts reap rewards.

Students always look forward to the milestone of convocation, as it celebrates many years of hard work and determination.

Last week, graduating MBA students hit another big milestone at the annual MBA Legacy Ring ceremony. DeGroote hosted the 5th annual ceremony June 9 at The National Club in Toronto.

The Legacy Ring tradition was started in 2012 by McMaster Humanities and DeGroote MBA alumnus Ryan Moran.

Following the 2008 financial crisis, Moran wanted to re-brand not only what it meant to be an MBA, but also be a member of the DeGroote network. His hope was that the rings would represent the knowledge and strong ethics the School bestowed upon recent graduates.

Moran also wanted the rings to add depth to the journey of DeGroote MBA students, and strengthen MBA unity among McMaster alumni.

The ring itself comes in large and small versions, both of which include the unique DeGroote MBA insignia. Personalized engraving is also an option.

Recent grads Susan Buchanan and Jackie Day were able to describe what this milestone meant to them:

“This ring represents all the hard work and effort it took to get to this point,” said Buchanan. “I am also a Waterloo engineering alumna, and we have a similar ring ceremony that really reaffirms this idea of being part of something bigger and having this network to fall back on.”

“This ring stands as a memory of all the hard work, self-discovery, and relationships that I was able to create during my time here,” added Day. “It is a memory of a major accomplishment that I was able to achieve by staying committed to my goals.”

Moran, with the support of current MBA students and DeGroote faculty and staff, has helped the ring ceremony became an exciting part of every student’s journey.

He looks forward to seeing the tradition evolve in the years ahead. Most notably, Moran would like to see every student presented with their ring and a plate of soft wax on which they can officially seal their “burden and future.”

DeGroote’s spring Class of 2016 crossed the stage Monday, June 13 during the faculty’s convocation ceremony at Hamilton Place. Among the 676 new alumni, 412 earned a B.Com. degree, 223 earned a MBA, 37 completed the Master of Health Management Program, and four earned a PhD.
