The City of Hamilton's Public Health Services has received a report of a gastrointestinal illness outbreak associated with a catered event held on Dec. 13 at East Meets West Campus Bistro at McMaster University. There is a possibility that individuals who consumed other food prepared at the East Meets West Bistro may also be ill.

“It is early in our investigation, but we suspect this is a food borne viral illness,” said Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, Hamilton's medical officer of health. “The operator is cooperating with Public Health recommendations regarding safe food handling practices and has voluntarily closed to complete cleaning prior to reopening.”

Symptoms associated with viral gastroenteritis include acute onset of vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and nausea. Symptoms usually appear 24 to 48 hours after a person becomes infected and last for 24 to 60 hours. Dehydration is the most common complication, especially among the young and elderly, and may require medical attention or hospitalization.

Public Health Services is asking anyone who developed gastrointestinal symptoms after consuming foods purchased from the East Meets West Bistro between Dec. 12 and 18, 2007 inclusive to contact Hamilton Public Health Services at 905-546-2063. Also, please dispose of any leftover food purchased from the East Meets West Bistro between Dec. 12 and 18.

This advisory applies to patrons who consumed food at the premises from Dec. 12 to 18, 2007. Foods consumed before that time or at other food service premises are not affected.
