Provost begins two searches for vice-provost roles

A sunny afternoon in snowy Faculty Hollow outside Hamilton Hall.

With the current vice-provost (International Affairs) and the vice-provost and dean of Graduate Studies approaching the end of their appointments, the search is beginning to appoint their replacements from within the McMaster community.

“These are important roles particularly as the university continues to expand its global ambitions and we work to attract and support an amazing range of graduate students,” said provost and vice-president, Academic Susan Tighe.  “The president’s Strategic Vision encourages us all to be aspirational and I strongly encourage that approach across all of the portfolios within the Provost’s Office.”

The Vice-Provost (International Affairs) will focus on developing and delivering on the University’s internationalization priorities, strengthening and building strategic alliances with the international community, and leading the operation and management of McMaster’s Office of International Affairs (OIA).

The Vice-Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies will focus on matters related to graduate education, strategic leadership in the development of new graduate initiatives, and advancing the priorities of the School of Graduate Studies.

“On behalf of the university I want to extend my thanks to both Peter Mascher and Doug Welch whose terms are ending.  They have been dedicated leaders who have made a real difference and have strengthened the work done within their portfolios,” said Tighe. “Their commitment throughout the pandemic years deserves particular notice as they helped to guide their own teams, have been an important part of university decisions, and supported students and partnerships throughout these challenging years.”

Internal searches for the deputy provost and vice-provost (Teaching and Learning) positions began earlier this winter.  The external search for the new Dean of Engineering is also underway, and the end of the Dean of Science first term is also approaching.  Search consultants have been hired to assist with the various searches.

Faculty members interested in either the vice-provost, (International Affairs) or the vice-provost and dean of Graduate Studies roles should forward a letter of intent and their current curriculum vitae to provostea@mcmaster.ca  The deadline for applications is April 4, 2022.
