McMaster University will receive more than $9.5-million from the Ontario government, as part of the five-year Open Ontario plan to further enhance the high-quality education universities and colleges provide to a growing number of students.

The announcement was made this morning at the University by Sophia Aggelonitis, Minister of Government Services and MPP for Hamilton Mountain. Under the plan, Mohawk College will also receive more than $2.8-million.

The Minister was accompanied at the announcement by Ted McMeekin, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Training, Colleges & Universities and MPP for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale.

“In tough times the government has to make difficult decisions about funding and we're grateful that it has found a way to continue to invest in universities and students,” said McMaster President Peter George. “It's also welcome recognition of the long-term contributions that universities like McMaster are able to make in their own communities and to Ontario's overall future prosperity.”

The government's Open Ontario Plan aims to increase the number of Ontarian's with a postsecondary credential to 70 per cent.

“This funding builds on the fantastic programs already in place at McMaster and Mohawk and will help accelerate Hamilton's growth by ensuring a competitive, educated work force,” says Aggelonitis.
