At least $300 million in matched funding from the Ontario government will support the Canada Foundation for Innovation for research and development, announced Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty this week.

“This announcement is a great relief to Ontario's university-based research community,” said McMaster University President Peter George. “It will help us to build the research capacity necessary to conduct research at the frontiers of knowledge.”

Mamdouh Shoukri, McMaster vice-president research & international affairs, is encouraged by the investment and is eager to get to work with his colleagues from other Ontario universities to determine how the fund will be implemented. He's recently been appointed chair of a new Ontario Council on University Research (OCUR) committee where he will work closely with ministry officials, advising on the direction and structure of the new fund.

McGuinty made the announcement in a televised address Wednesday to the Ontario Economic Summit in Niagara-On-The Lake. He said the government is committing at least $300 million to match federal funding from CFI.
