President’s Awards recognize 115 outstanding staff members

More than 250 members of the McMaster community gathered in CIBC Hall on May 31 to applaud their colleagues at the annual President’s Awards for Outstanding Achievement.


Champion, role model, mentor, friend, co-conspirator. Words used to describe this year’s recipients of the President’s Awards for Outstanding Service.

Held on May 31 in CIBC Hall, this year’s event honoured 115 McMaster employees for going “far beyond the job description,” in the words of one nominator.

McMaster President Patrick Deane presented nine individual awards, two team awards, and a special achievement award.

New this year, a Lifetime Achievement Award celebrated eight long-time staff members:

  • Doug Keller, Laboratory Manager: Chemical Engineering
  • Debbie Marinoff Shupe, Manager, Recreation Services: Athletics & Recreation
  • Susan Marsh-Rollo, Research Assistant: Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour
  • Barbara Nowacki, Clinical Research Nurse: Medicine
  • Debbie Passa, Advancement Services Supervisor: University Advancement
  • Barb Pegg, Academic Advisor, Student Experience: DeGroote School of Business
  • Teresa Vallera, Division & Program Manager, Emergency Medicine: Medicine

The recipient of the first President’s Lifetime Achievement Award is Marvin Gunderman, Manager, Technical Services: Biology.

Eight staff members received Individual Awards for Outstanding Service in 2015:

  • Marie Bailey, Administrative Assistant: Pathology & Molecular Medicine
  • Dan Bosnyak, Technical Director (LIVELab): Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour
  • Jennifer Jury, Research Lab Technician: Medicine
  • Diane Lawson, Program Coordinator, Respirology & Administrative Assistant: Medicine
  • Ron Lodewyks, Technical Services Coordinator: Mechanical Engineering
  • Tracie Long, Senior Associate Registrar: Student Financial Aid & Scholarships
  • Karen Neumann, Undergraduate Lab Coordinator: Chemistry & Chemical Biology
  • Nicole Sloss, Research Administrative Coordinator: Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences

Team awards were presented to:

  • The Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Testing Activity Team, the first lab at a Canadian university to obtain a Health Canada Drug Establishment License (DEL), a significant undertaking which now places McMaster at the forefront in the manufacturing of medicines.
  • The McMaster Academic Planner (MAP) Launch Team for creating http://mapsci.ca/, an interactive web tool – the first of its kind in North America – that showcases McMaster and guides undergraduates through their academic journey in the Faculty of Science and beyond.

The Pan Am Games Team was recognized with a Special Achievement Award for last summer’s soccer satellite village, which created an athletic experience described as “flawless” and “second to none.”
