New and returning students arrived on campus over the weekend, ready for another school year.

Before classes begin Thursday, a number of activities have been organized for Welcome Week 2002.

The annual week of events is a collaboration of resources between the McMaster Students Union (MSU), student faculty societies, other student groups/clubs, residences, the Department of Student Affairs and the Society of Off-Campus Students (SOCS).

Students have many opportunties to learn about McMaster this week and have fun.

“This year's Welcome Week promises to offer a wide variety of activities,” says Jayson Duggan, director of MSU campus events. “We are really trying to ensure that events are available to as many students as possible.”

The week began with residence move-in on Saturday and Sunday and the Mac Connector sponsored by the MSU.

Monday was filled with off-campus and residence socials, motivational speaker Tony Conte and the annual bed races.

Today (Tuesday) is faculty day with Faculty Fusion — a chance to meet faculty reps. A number of activities are planned throughout the day, including an MSU Campus Events concert by Big Sugar (and friends) in Faculty Hollow. Following the concert, Spiderman will show on the big screen outdoors.

Wednesday is Clubsfest in the McMaster University Student Centre marketplace. This event will give students an opportunity to check out the more than 120 clubs the MSU and McMaster offers. The afternoon includes the legendary Airband Competition in Faculty Hollow and the P.J. Parade. In the evening, the MSU Comedyfest with headline Sean Collins will be followed by a karaoke party.

Thursday is the start of classes as well as the MSU sidewalk sale, located behind Hamilton Hall. The sidewalk sale gives students an opportunity to get free items from local vendors.

On Friday, the MSU Superpub begins at 9 p.m. For admission, students need Welcome Week bracelets purchased through the Welcome Week Pak.

Saturday wraps up the week with Shinerama to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Cheer on the Marauders in the annual Welcome Week football game in Waterloo. Top off the week with MacFest featuring a casino and the legendary hypontist Mike Mandel.
