The inaugural winners are Jim and Betty Bechtel. “The Bechtels demonstrate in many ways what it truly means to be good neighbours and all of West Hamilton, including McMaster, has benefited from their hard work, dedication and thoughtfulness,” said President Peter George.

PACCR members from 1995-1998, the Bechtels are founding members of the Ainslie Wood/Westdale Association of Resident Home Owners, and currently serve on the Community Advisory Committee on the University's proposed new entrance. They are also actively involved with Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Police in efforts to improve their community.

The Bechtel's house has been a home away from home for many students. Student leaders are often invited in for a meal, and if student neighbours need a helping hand when the furnace quits or have other problems, Jim and Betty are always there to help.

The PACCR Community Service Award was created to honour those who help to bring neighbours together and to build a stronger community in West Hamilton.
