Approximately 1,500 McMaster students are expected to participate in this year's Shinerama on Saturday, Sept. 23.

The fundraising event, which is a part of Welcome Week activities, is held at most Canadian university campuses and has become the largest charity event sponsored by universities and colleges across the country since its inception in 1964.

Last year, McMaster students raised $21,000 shining the shoes of fellow students, faculty, staff and members of the Hamilton community. The funds go towards finding a cure for cystic fibrosis, an hereditary disease that affects the respiratory and digestive systems. In addition to the actual Shine Day, Shinerama has expanded to include a special pub at the Downstairs John, prize draws and contests.

This year's goal for McMaster is $25,000, and a challenge has been issued to Guelph University to meet or beat that goal!
