The third-ranked McMaster Marauders defeated the Queen's Golden Gaels Saturday on an 88-yard kickoff return by Jesse Lumsden with just eight seconds left in regulation.

Teammate Mike Ray booted a 21-yard field goal in overtime to give the Marauders a 30-27 victory over the fourth-ranked Gaels in front of a crowd of 6,337.

The Gaels, who erased a 13-0 first-quarter deficit and trailed 20-14 entering the final frame, thought the game was theirs after quarterback Tommy Denison found Craig Spears on a 99-yard pass-and-run touchdown play that gave them a 27-20 lead with only 28 seconds on the clock.

But Lumsden, who entered the game as CIS's leading rusher with 468 yards and added 82 on 13 carries this afternoon, followed with his spectacular return to send OUA's top two teams in overtime.

McMaster quarterback Jon Behie completed 12 of 31 attempts for 237 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

But despite allowing 449 yards and 27 points, their first of the season, the story of the day for the Marauders was again their defensive unit. MAC's D sacked Denison eight times, intercepted him once, and recovered two fumbles. Jeff Robertson was credited with three of those sacks, while Mike Gowde had two.

For Queen's, Tommy Denison had another spectacular day completing 25 of 41 passes for 459 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His favourite targets were Iain Flemming, with nine catches for 182 yards and one major, and Craig Spear, with eight catches for 174 yards and one score.

Next Saturday, McMaster (4-0) travels to Ottawa (2-2), while Queen's (3-1) travels to Guelph (1-3).
