Posted on Oct. 6: Marauders defeat Western Mustangs in Homecoming game

McMaster third-year running back Jesse Lumsden scored five touchdowns as the third-ranked McMaster Marauders defeated The University of Western Ontario Mustangs 64-35 in front of soldout Homecoming crowd of 6,949 Saturday.

Lumsden's five touchdown performance equaled his father Neil's career day on Nov. 1, 1975 vs. Queens. Neil Lumsden played for the University of Ottawa from 1972-75.

Lumsden rushed for 288 yards on 27 carries and five touchdowns on the day to place him in a six-way tie for second with the most touchdowns in a single game with former McMaster Marauder Kojo Aidoo (2001), former Western Mustang and brother of head coach Greg Marshall, Blake Marshall (1985), and Jesse's father Neil Lumsden (1975). Fifth-year running back and first team all-Canadian Kyle Pyear collected 97 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Jon Behie completed nine of 19 passes for 198. Behie's favourite receivers on the day were Chris Rankin with 104 yards on five catches and one major, Vaughn Swart with 50 yards on two receptions, Konrad Gloge with 49 yards on two snares scoring a touchdown, and tight end Sean Postma with 33 yards on two grabs.

Kicker Michael added four field goals on five attempts, including one single to tally 13 points. Ray leads the OUA in scoring with
88 points.

McMaster accumulated 627 net yards on 395 yards rushing and 236 yards
passing, while The University of Western Ontario was held to 361 yards on 107 rushing on 264 yards passing.

For Western, Chris Hessel threw for 221 yards, completing 13 of 23 passes. Andy Fantuz had 117 yards on two receptions, both leading to touchdowns.

Christian Heffernan caught four balls for 53 yards, including on TD. Mike Bonk and Gilliaume Leroux added a major for the Mustangs.

Fifth-year receiver Chris Rankin surpassed a 1,200-yard milestone in punt return yardage collecting 20 yards on two opportunites. Rankin has 2,639 multi-purpose yards in his career.

Defensively, McMaster linebacker Jay Pottinger, returning from injury had four tackles and four assisted tackles. John Chard added three tackles and three assisted tackles. Brandon Little and Tristan Clovis each had two interceptions.

For the Mustangs, Tom Norris had six tackles and one assisted tackle. Chad Asselstine added five tackles and one assisted tackle.

McMaster travels to The University of Windsor to take on the 4-2 Lancers at South Campus Stadium next Saturday, Oct. 11.
