It may only be a day, but it could be the experience of a lifetime.

The Experiential Education Initiative within the Faculty of Social Sciences at McMaster University, in partnership with Volunteer Hamilton and supported by the United Way, is organizing an event that can help students make a difference in their community.

Mac Serve will offer students the opportunity to spend half a day volunteering in a local community organization and connect this to their academic and personal life.

“By participating in Mac Serve, we hope students will learn more about the urgent and pressing needs that exist in the community and will be inspired to get more involved and make a difference,” said Kris McCrady, leadership co-ordinator with Experiential Education.

Local organizations will receive genuine help and be introduced to a diverse population of students, which may also result in increased student volunteering in the future.

Mac Serve will take place Saturday, Oct. 5 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. After students register with their team in the University Centre Marketplace, an official welcome will take place with a guest speech by Winston Tinglin, CEO of the United Way Burlington Hamilton-Wentworth. Students will then be transported to their volunteer placements — such as Kiwanis, Children's Aid Society and BIG Brothers — where they will be oriented to the agency and work on specific projects. Small group discussions afterward, will assist them in examining their experience and increase their awareness of community issues and challenges. The day will end with a recognition lunch at McMaster for all participants.
