Participating organizations include: Mohawk College, St. Joseph's Healthcare and Hamilton Health Sciences.

“Pfizer Canada is extremely proud to partner with The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame to sponsor the Pfizer Canada Discovery Days in Health Sciences,” said Don Sancton, director of Corporate Affairs for Pfizer Canada Inc. “We are committed to helping young people across Canada see the attraction of pursuing careers in research and development.”

The Discovery Day will include lectures, career panel discussions and workshops with some of the brightest scientific minds in Canada including keynote speaker and CMHF inductee John Evans. Evans headed a team that, in 1965, began to plan a revolutionary medical curriculum for the new Medical Faculty to be founded at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. When students entered the first year of the program in 1970, they were introduced immediately to patients as the focus and centre of their learning. Evans also played a prominent role in international health, conducting studies on population based' medicine for the Rockefeller Foundation, and serving from 1979 to 1983 as director of the Population, Health and Nutrition Department of the World Bank, in Washington, D.C.

Opening remarks were delivered by John G. Kelton, dean, McMaster University Faculty of Health Sciences; Rosemary Knechtel, dean of Health Sciences, Mohawk College; Ken Clarke, senior account manager, Group Marketing, The Great-West Life Assurance Company and Betsy Little, executive director, The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame has been presenting career awareness workshops to secondary students since 1997. The Pfizer Canada Discovery Day in Health Sciences at McMaster is one of seven planned for 2003-2004 at universities across Canada.

“The combination of learning and fun is a very powerful formula,” says Betsy Little, CMHF executive director. “The students actually experience the thrill of exploration and discovery. Many of them become hooked.”

Pfizer Canada Discovery Days in Health Sciences are the only national career awareness initiatives specifically geared toward careers in medicine and the health sciences.

Pfizer Canada, headquartered in Kirkland, Quebec, is the Canadian operation of Pfizer Inc., the world's leading research-based pharmaceutical company. Pfizer discovers and develops innovative medications for humans and animals and markets leading brands of non-prescription medications.

The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame is a registered charitable organization that celebrates discovery and innovation in medical science with a goal to raise awareness of Canada's rich medical history. Through educational programs, The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame encourages young people to pursue careers in the health sciences, fostering future generations of medical heroes.
