Friday, Nov. 8 will be a memorable day for 789 McMaster students. The students will receive their undergraduate and graduate degrees at two Fall Convocation ceremonies held at Hamilton Place (9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.) For a full listing of the degrees to be conferred, click here.

Four outstanding leaders in public service, medical science and urban design will be recognized for their achievements with honorary degrees at Fall Convocation.

Legendary hockey dad Walter Gretzky and media executive Israel Asper will receive honorary degrees at morning Convocation (9:30 a.m.). Esteemed Japanese physician Shigeaki Hinohara and award-winning architect Raymond Moriyama will receive their degrees at the afternoon Convocation (2:30 p.m.). Both ceremonies will be held at the Great Hall at Hamilton Place.

Walter Gretzky, Doctor of Laws

In addition to being known as the Great One's dad, Gretzky is active with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and is founder of SCORE (Summer Computer Opportunities in Recreation and Education), a summer computer camp for visually impaired youth. Gretzky, a stroke survivor, is a spokesperson for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and has published two successful books: From the Backyard Rink to the Stanley Cup and Walter Gretzky: On Family, Hockey and Healing. read more

Israel Asper, Doctor of Laws *

Asper has served as chair or member of the board of several leading Canadian companies and is the founder of CanWest Global Communications Corp. He serves as executive chair of the board and its subsidiaries. Asper was elected twice to the Manitoba legislature and is president of the Asper Foundation, which he founded in 1983. He has received numerous awards for his business and charitable endeavours. read more

Shigeaki Hinohara, Doctor of Science

Hinohara has devoted more than 60 years to medicine and medical science through his work internationally as an internist and educator. His medical interests have been in the fields of cardiology, psychosomatic medicine and preventative medicine and recently his writings have focused on aging, hospice care and music therapy. Now in his 90s, Hinohara has forged a collaborative relationship with the University, sending nurses and physicians to study McMaster's problem and evidence-based learning models. read more

Raymond Moriyama, Doctor of Laws *

Moriyama is the founder of Moriyama & Teshima, a Toronto-based architecture firm that today has a world-wide reputation for excellence in design. Moriyama has applied his expertise and unique vision to several projects including the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, the Ontario Science Centre, the Toronto Reference Library, the new Canadian War Museum in Ottawa and on campus, the newly-completed McMaster University Student Centre. read more
