Mathematicians will have a chance to crunch numbers with one of the world's experts on number theory Dec. 3-6.

John Coates, Sadleirian professor of pure mathematics from the University of Cambridge, will present the 2002 Ronald and Helen Britton Lecture, hosted by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics.

He will discuss “Iwasawa Algebras and Arithmetic”. Each lecture takes place in the Burke Science Building, Rm. 108, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
The lectures are held annually in memory of Ronald and Helen Britton. Ronald Britton, former chair of mathematics at McMaster, endowed the annual Britton Lectures in memory of his late wife Helen Britton. The Britton Lectures have provided the University with a series of distinguished invited speakers since it's beginning in 1978.
The Britton Chair in Mathematics was established in the late 1980s and the current Britton Chair holder is Ian Hambleton, professor of mathematics.
