The tradition of the annual Children's Christmas party will continue this year thanks to the work of several members of the McMaster community, including President Peter George.

The Dec. 1 party, geared to children and grandchildren of McMaster employees and featuring the requisite visit from Santa, was almost cancelled when the 2000 Christmas party committee members determined there were insufficient funds to cover the costs of hosting the seasonal event.

Earlier this month, President George offered to contribute $5000 from the Office of the President budget to fund the bulk of the party's costs.

“How can we not have a children's Christmas party?” President George said. “It's a tradition. We simply have to have it as part of our seasonal celebrations.”

The party begins at 1 p.m. in Convocation Hall and includes arts and crafts, face painting, games, carol singing and a performance by musician Jim Witter beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Tickets for the event are $8 per child, with all children 12 years old and under receiving a gift. There is no charge for adults.

The tickets are on sale Thursday, Nov. 15 and Friday, Nov. 16 from noon until 2 p.m. at the Starbucks in the basement of Chester New Hall, at the Ewart Angus Centre and at the courthouse campus. Tickets are limited.

The McMaster Social Club will cover the ticket cost for any social club members.
