Yates Cup play by play

Queen's took a 5-4 second quarter lead when McMaster conceded a safety, but the Marauder defence stood strong and kept the Gaels from ever regaining the advantage.

McMaster had a 11-5 lead at the half, but stormed ahead in the third frame scoring 15 unanswered points to make it 26-5. The Gaels did make a late fourth quarter charge, but were trailing by 28 points after the Marauders increased their lead to 33-5 on a Kyle Pyear rushing touchdown.

The visitors scored two unanswered majors to close the gap to 33-19, but the McMaster defence had all the answers the rest of the way for the high-powered air attack of the Golden Gaels led by OUA MVP and CIS record-holder quarterback Tom Denison.

The Marauders held the Gaels to 270 yards of total offence on the afternoon and forced six turnovers with five interceptions and one fumble recovery. Defensive backs Keswick Wainwright (2), Jesse Card, Josh Armstrong and Brandon Little all had interceptions, while Mike Botteril was a menace from the linebacker spot and on special teams forcing one fumble and collecting two sacks. Botteril's performance earned him the OUA/RCA Player of the Game honour.

On offence for the Marauders, CIS leading rusher Kyle Pyear gained 126 yards and scored two touchdowns on 22 carries. Vaughn Swart had six receptions for 112 yards and one touchdown. Konrad Gloge had two catches for 61 yards and a major. Starting rookie quarterback John Behie completed 4 of 8 passes for 57 yards, before Mike Zaremba came off the bench to complete 8 of 14 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns to secure the victory.

On the strength of kicker Mike Ray's 12 punts for 461 yards, the special teams unit had another solid day forcing Queen's to work out of their own zone most of the afternoon.

Queen's quarterback Tom Denison completed 16 of 41 passing attempts for 296 yards with five interceptions. Denison also rushed for 19 yards and a touchdown. Iain Fleming was the Gaels top receiver with five catches for 92 yards. Bryan Crawford rushed for the second Queen's touchdown.
