McMaster University continues to be ranked as one of Canada's top innovative universities by Maclean's magazine.

In the reputational survey section of the Nov. 11 ranking issue, McMaster continues to be in the top five in the areas of 'highest quality,' 'most innovative' and 'best overall' and placed second in the 'most innovative' category.

The annual Maclean's ranking takes a measure of the undergraduate experience, comparing universities in three peer groupings. McMaster is ranked in the medical doctoral category that includes universities with a broad range of PhD programs and research, as well as medical schools.

President Peter George said although he was disappointed McMaster moved into second place this year in the 'most innovative' section of the survey, he recognized that the competition, which includes Toronto, Alberta, Queen's and McGill, is intense.

“Our history shows that we have been in the forefront of innovative teaching and research for more than 30 years,” said President George. “We will continue to foster a culture of innovation that will attract the highest quality faculty and students to participate in the unique learning and research environment that makes us a leading university.

“Often there are small distinctions in these rankings. For a school of our size to compete in a category with schools that are among the largest in the country and for McMaster to consistently place where we do is a terrific accomplishment.

“The reputational survey continues to place us higher than the numerical measures on student body, classes, faculty, finances and library, although there are many bright spots within these categories.”

President George said he was particularly pleased to see the University jumped five places in the 'student services (percentage of budget)' category. McMaster moved to tenth place from last year's ranking of fifteenth in this area.

“We recognized this was an area for improvement and we have worked hard to better our performance and provide students with the services, scholarships and bursaries needed to enhance their educational experience,” said President George.

McMaster ranked 10th overall in the medical doctoral category.
