Dr. Akbar Panju, professor of medicine at McMaster University has received the Osler Award from the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine (CSIM).

The award honours individuals who exemplify the best in medicine, in the tradition of Sir William Osler, renowned Canadian physician who revolutionized modern medicine (1849-1919). The award is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in achievement in the field of general internal medicine, either in clinical practice, research, medical education, or specialty development.

“We at McMaster University are particularly proud of Dr. Akbar Panju, who recently became our William J. Walsh Professor of Medicine,” said Dr. John Kelton, Dean and Vice-President, Health Sciences. “Dr. Panju is a remarkable physician who combines a true caring spirit with the ability to solve the most complex and difficult medical problems. He is a unique individual whose abilities are so recognized by other physicians, that increasingly he finds himself being the doctor who takes care of doctors in our region.”

Dr. Panju came to Canada from Liverpool, UK in 1975. He was the sole family physician in Ignace, Ontario, for two years, and subsequently a family physician in Thunder Bay for two years.

He did his internal medical residency at McMaster University from 1980-1985, with additional training in cardiology and thrombosis. He has been a faculty member in the department of medicine at McMaster University since 1986, and chief of medicine at Hamilton Health Sciences since 1997.

Dr. Panju is a past recipient McMaster's John C. Sibley Award and the Resident Award for Teaching. He is a past-president of Canadian Society of Internal Medicine, is an accomplished author, and has edited and reviewed numerous manuscripts for professional organizations.
