Posted on May 28: McMaster student named to Canadian Student National Baseball Team

[img_inline align=”right” src=”http://padnws01.mcmaster.ca/images/krywionek2.jpg” caption=”Josh Krywionek “]McMaster University pitcher Josh Krywionek has been selected to the Canadian Student National Baseball Team that will compete at the 2004 Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) World University Baseball Championship July 23-Aug. 1.

Krywionek, the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Conference All-Star
selection at staring pitcher this season, was a perfect 4-0 during the regular season boasting the third lowest ERA in the conference at 0.76.

In the OUA playoffs he threw two complete games for wins, not allowing a single earned run. In a total of 14 innings pitched he struck out 13 and finished the post season with 0.00 ERA. Krywionek is the lone returnee from the Canadian team that competed at 2002 Inaugural FISU championship. He recorded an eight-strikeout performance in six innings against the powerhouse U.S. National Team at the 2002 event. Three of his six strikeouts came against Southern University's Rickie Weeks the 2003 Major League Baseball Players Association Golden Spikes Award (top amateur player) winner and second pick overall in the 2003 Major League draft.

Selected as alternates to the Canadian team where Marauder third
basemen Kevin Comiskey and designated hitter/first basemen Jeremy Paikin. Comiskey and Paikin where both OUA All-Star selections this past season. Paikin, the Marauder Baseball MVP, led the OUA and the Marauders in batting average (0.523), on-base percentage (0.596) and he was second in the league in most other offensive categories.

Comiskey was third in the league in RBI's with 14 during the regular season as well as being fourth in batting average (0.370), slugging percentage (0.481), and on-base percentage (0.477).

The 22-player Canadian squad for this summer's championship, held in
Tainan, Chinese Taipei, is comprised of student-athletes currently
enrolled in post-secondary institutions in both Canada and the United
States. The Canadian Team is also in the process of completing
negotiations with USA Baseball to play a “Friendship Series” with the
U.S. National Team in order to prepare for the FISU World
Championships. The detailed schedule for the “Friendship Series” and
World Championship will be announced at a later date.
