posted on March 21: Performance enhancement, exercise, health psychology topics for weekend kinesiology symposium

The Department of Kinesiology is hosting the 6th
annual Eastern Canadian Sport and Exercise Psychology Symposium (ECSEPS) this weekend.

ECSEPS is a conference which provides students with a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere in which to present research and applied experiences to peers and professors.

Topics for this year's conference will address
psychology/performance enhancement (imagery and self-talk, coaching
communication and behaviours, social-cognitive studies of elite sport,
applied intervention research) and exercise/health psychology (exercise in
special populations, environmental influences on physical activity and
health, athletic injury and stress, and self-presentation concerns).

Conference sessions will run Friday, March 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, March 23 from 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Kenneth Taylor Hall.

In addition to the 51 student presentations, there will be two keynote speakers and a panel discussion. The keynotes are Lawrence Brawley of the University of
Waterloo who will speak about The Seduction of Sport and Exercise
Psychology by Intuitive Appeal
and Curt Lox of the University of Southern Illinois at Edwardsville who will discuss The State of the (Athletic) Union: Coaching and Consulting in 2002. The panel will address the theme of Balance in Academia, featuring academics describing how they manage their teaching, researching and advising duties along with extra-curricular endeavours in competitive sport, consulting, and coaching.

All are welcome to attend the conference, with special conference rates for McMaster students and coaches.

ECSEPS fees for McMaster students and coaches (with student card)are:

  • Full conference fees (includes social program and conference packet)- $40
  • Friday or Saturday one day pass (excludes social program and conference packet)- $10.
  • Registration will take place on Friday from 5 to 6 p.m., and Saturday
    from 8 to 8:45 a.m. in the basement of Kenneth Taylor Hall outside room B135.
