Posted on March 2: Message to McMaster community regarding possible OPSEU strike

default-hero-image

There is a possibility of a strike by full-time
faculty of Mohawk College, represented by the Ontario Public Service
Employees' Union (OPSEU), as early as Wednesday, March 3, 2004. In this event, there may be picketing activity on McMaster's campus,
particularly at the Institute for Applied Health Sciences (IAHS), a
facility that is jointly operated by Mohawk College and McMaster
University. As this may affect McMaster students, staff and faculty,
this message is to inform you of McMaster's plans in this regard.

All of Ontario's community colleges conduct collective bargaining
negotiations centrally with OPSEU, representing the full-time college
faculty, including full-time librarians and counselors of all the
colleges. Continued negotiations are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, March 1 and 2, and all parties are committed to trying to reach a settlement without a strike.

If a strike occurs and there is picketing on the McMaster campus, please be aware of the following:

  • All classes taught by McMaster faculty will continue, including
    classes held at IAHS.
  • McMaster employees are advised that they will be expected to report for work as scheduled and as usual, unless they feel physically
threatened at a picket line, in which case they are to contact McMaster Security for assistance and their supervisor to receive instructions.
  • McMaster will use e-mail and the Daily News Web site to provide information to employees and students during any college work stoppage.

McMaster has been informed by the administration of Mohawk College that its intentions are as follows:

  • All Mohawk post-secondary classes will be cancelled during any work stoppage, including those held at IAHS.
  • Any picketing at the McMaster campus will be conducted between the
hours of 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., and there will be an information picket on the sidewalk outside IAHS, not at the main McMaster entrances.
  • College faculty will have access to their normal parking and to the IAHS building.
  • Mohawk College services delivered by non-faculty Mohawk staff will
    continue to operate.
  • On-going information is available through Mohawk's information line at 905-575-2444, and the Mohawk College Web site.

Further updates will be provided on the Daily News Web site as
information becomes available.
