Mathematics professor Ian Hambleton has been elected by acclamation as a representative of the teaching staff on the Board of Governors for a three-year term commencing July 1, 2002.

He succeeds Brian McCarry, whose term on the Board ends on June 30, 2002.

Hambleton has been a faculty member at McMaster since 1975. He has served on numerous departmental committees and on the University Senate. He was chair of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics from 1987 until 1993, and again from 1997 until 2000.

Hambleton's research concerns symmetries and dynamics of complex systems, and fundamental questions in geometry and topology.

He is the author of 47 research publications and is a frequent organizer of international exchanges and workshops.

He has served on the NSERC research grants committee for mathematics (1994-97) and is currently on the scientific advisory committee for the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques in Montreal.

On July 1, 2000, Hambleton was named to the Dr. Ronald F. Britton Chair in Mathematics.
