McMaster University Press will release a book on former McMaster President Harry Thode on Thursday, June 19, 2003.

The book, authored by Manuel Zack, Lawrence Martin and Alvin Lee, tells the story of how the young Prairie man became an outstanding scholar, exceptional educator, and world-renowned researcher. Today, McMaster University is one of the top research-intensive universities in Canada, in large part thanks to Dr. Thode's own pioneering research in nuclear science, his support of research, and his leadership as the University's second president.

In 1939, McMaster was a respected but relatively modest institution, with its major purpose being the teaching of undergraduate students in arts, science, and theology. Today, McMaster is recognized both nationally and internationally as one of Canada's most student-centred research-intensive universities.

Dr. Harry Thode, president from 1961 to 1972, was largely responsible for transforming McMaster into the major research centre it is today. He was also instrumental in creating the Faculty of Engineering and the McMaster University Medical School. He died in 1997.

McMaster University is very pleased to celebrate the launch of Harry Thode: Scientist and Builder at McMaster University, a new book that chronicles the life of the former McMaster president and scientist of international renown.
