McMaster University is the first university in North America to develop a program to train cardiovascular nurses as researchers.

Heather Arthur, a professor in McMaster's school of nursing, is director of the FUTURE (Facilitating Unique Training Using Research and Education) program for nurse-scientists who want to pursue careers in heart research.

The $1.8-million program, based at McMaster, is co-funded by the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health; and by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

“Cardiovascular diseases remain Canada's No. 1 health problem, so we definitely need more nurse-researchers in this area,” said Arthur.

There are only 14 cardiovascular nurse-scientists in Canada.
