One member of the department shaved her head and one had an “extreme makeover” to raise $1,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The department held the fundraiser in honour of colleagues, friends and family members who have been faced with cancer. To help raise these funds, Jeannette Jackson, administrative secretary in the department, (pictured right) got her head shaved by Klaus Schultes, electron microscopy specialist and Kathy McIntosh, undergraduate assistant/advisor; and Anne Symons, administrative secretary, (pictured below, before and after the makeover) had an “extreme makeover.”

Bill MacIntosh, public issues chair, from the Hamilton-Wentworth Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society was present at the July 7 event to thank everyone for their contributions.

The donation of $1,100 included contributions from biology staff, faculty, friends and relatives. The Department of Biochemistry also contributed $235 towards the total amount collected.

“On behalf of the Department of Biology, we wish to extend our thanks to everyone for their generous contributions and support for this cause,” said biology administrator Marge Geroux. “Who will be next to step up to the challenge? Every donation, big or small, helps towards putting an end to cancer.”
