The union representing hospitality services employees and the Board of Governors' executive committee has ratified the terms of a settlement for a new collective agreement.

The Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) Local 532 and the University met in bargaining throughout the fall to negotiate a renewal of the collective agreement that was to expire Dec. 31, 2002.

A tentative settlement was reached in mid-December. The union ratified the terms of the tentative agreement at a meeting on Jan. 9. The executive committee of the Board of Governors ratified the agreement earlier this week.

The new agreement runs for three years, expiring on Dec. 31, 2005. The agreement provides for across the board increases of 2.75 per cent effective Jan. 1, 2003, 2 per cent on Jan.1, 2004 and 2.25 per cent starting Jan. 1, 2005. It also contains adjustments to cook rates, a variety of benefit improvements and a revamping of the language in other areas of the agreement.

“We are pleased that we were able to address the concerns of the staff and arrive at a settlement with the union before the old agreement expired,” said Albert Ng, director of Hospitality Services. “We value the huge contribution our staff are making to providing excellent food for the McMaster community.”
