The new University Centre is now officially the McMaster University Student Centre.

The Board of Governors approved the naming of the facility at its Dec. 14 meeting.

The Student Representative Assembly of the McMaster Students Union voted in favour of the name at its Nov. 26 meeting after considering a shortlist of three names. Initially, 45 names were nominated by 72 submitters.

MSU president Marc Marzotto told the board the name “does signify the three founding partners on the building” — undergraduate and part-time students and the University.

“It is a generic name so that no one donor is singled out, as more than 70,000 students over 20 years will have contributed to paying for it,” Marzotto said.

The $28-million building, which is under construction, is slated to be finished in August 2001.
