Electronic security devices used in McMaster equipment recently prevented two thefts on campus.

Silent alarms were activated when thieves attempted to steal computers and a projector. McMaster Security Services responded immediately, caught the suspects and recovered the stolen merchandise.

The first attempted theft occurred on Tuesday, Jan. 27 in the early evening, when officers were alerted to a silent alarm activated by two computers hocked up to the security system. The officers responded and tracked down the suspects. Officers later recovered the computers and filed charged with Hamilton Police.

In the early evening on Wednesday, Feb. 4, police averted another theft in the Burke Sciences Building. This time a student was attempting to steal a projector, when the silent alarm was activated. Police caught the suspect in the process of stealing the projector and filed an attempted theft charge with Hamilton Police.

“This shows that technological advances are being used on campus,” says Cathy O'Donnell, sergeant of Crime Prevention & Campus Community Relations, “and they are helping us recover and prevent thefts of computerized equipment.”
