Posted on Feb. 24: Marauder athletes score off the court

Ontario University Athletics (OUA) presented three Marauders with Player of the Year awards and named another to the West First All-Star team. Head coach Joe Raso was named OUA West Coach of the Year.

Marauder Adam Guiney was named OUA West Men's Basketball Player of the Year, joining Marauder OUA West Players of the Year Jack Vanderpol (1993), Titus Channer (1997 & 1998) and former player and current assistant coach, Steve Maga (1999 & 2001).

Guiney led McMaster to a 17-5 season, and first place finish in the OUA West Division.

Last week, McMaster women's basketball player and fifth-year senior Christen Dickenson was awarded the OUA West Player of the Year.

McMaster third-year guard Ben Katz was also named to the OUA West First All-Star team.

McMaster head coach Joe Raso, in his 12th season with the Marauders, was awarded his sixth and second consecutive OUA West Coach of the Year Award. Raso earned his 300th Career win this season. Raso is the only active coach with 300 or more victory that has never received CIS Coach of the Year Honours.

Raso was quoted as saying that “this is a coaching award and it belongs to the entire coaching staff including assistant coaches Rod Bynam, Andrew Sergi, Steve Maga, Amos Connolly and recruiting co-ordinator Jeff Joseph.”

By virtue of a first place finish, McMaster received a bye in the OUA West Quarter-Final. McMaster will host the OUA West Semi-Finals Saturday, Feb. 28,at 2 p.m. at the Burridge Gymnasium on the McMaster University Campus.

McMaster will play the winner of the OUA West quarter-final between the host University of Waterloo Warriors and the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.

Tickets for the OUA west semi-final between McMaster and either the University of Waterloo or Wilfrid Laurier University are available at the Copps Coliseum Box Office and the McMaster Compass Information Centre, located in the McMaster Student Centre with no service fee. Tickets are also available via Ticketmaster by phone at 905-527-7666,
