McMaster University will receive $8.1 million from the federal government this year to help cover the indirect costs associated with research.

The indirect costs of research include expenses for:

  • utilities, repairs, security, environmental health and safety and insurance
  • libraries and research archiving
  • ethics committees
  • and technology transfer and commercialization services.

“This is welcome news and necessary money for our researchers to continue their ground-breaking work,” said Mamdouh Shoukri, vice-president research and international affairs.

The federal government set up a permanent program in the 2003 budget to help Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals and research institutes defray the indirect costs of research.

Each institution's allocation is based on the average contribution that an institution has received in the last three years from the three federal research granting councils the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Hamilton MP Stan Keyes made the announcement last night at a dinner celebrating McMaster's research excellence.

More than 50 researchers who are recipients of prestigious awards such as the Premier's Research Excellence Awards (PREAs), Canada Research Chairs, the John Charles Polanyi Awards and the Killam Research Fellowships were honoured for their achievements.
