McMaster University is hosting the 2002 Canadian and Ontario University Lifeguard Championships from
March 15-16.

The team from McMaster along with a total of 19
additional university teams from across Ontario and the country will
compete for the provincial and national championship titles.

Competing teams will participate in a series of six events at McMaster's Ivor Wynne Centre pool.

The events are: water rescue, individual and resuscitation skills, manikin relay, obstacle relay, medley
relay, as well as a first aid event.

For each event teams will accumulate points that will be used to determine their overall standing and the resulting overall champion.

McMaster placed second overall at last year's Ontario championship held at the University of Guelph.

The sport of lifesaving is governed nationally by the Lifesaving Society and has continued to grow in recent years. Lifesaving was recently sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee and has been a part of such international competitions as the 2001 Goodwill Games and the 2001 Commonwealth Championships.
