Hamilton will now proceed to the international round of competition against New Delhi. The winner will be announced next fall.

“There is tremendous excitement that Hamilton has been chosen to represent Canada in the international round of the competition,” says McMaster President Peter George, who was in Ottawa today for the announcement. “This successful bid will bring tremendous international attention and benefits to Hamilton and to McMaster. This is an exciting chance not only to work closely with the City to bring the very best to Hamilton, but also to create a legacy for McMaster.”

Halifax was also in the race for the Canadian bid.

Hamilton's Commonwealth Games Committee, the City and McMaster University will work closely to ensure the games' success while addressing logistical and other issues on campus and within the neighbouring communities.

The bid provides an opportunity to transform the University's athletics facilities and provide world-class athletic centres for students, faculty, staff and the community. The bid will bring new and updated facilities to many parts of the City. For McMaster, it will mean a new stadium, an aquatic centre, and a multi-sport athletic complex. The athletes' village would also be housed at McMaster, using existing residences and other facilities.
