Posted on Aug. 20: Football, men’s rugby recruiting class announced

McMaster announced the 2003 recruiting class for football and men's rugby today.

The McMaster men's rugby team recruited eight members of the Ontario
junior rugby program. The recruiting class includes three members of the provincial under 18 team that recently won the national championship, the first for Ontario since 1981. The team included Cam Mitchell, Mark Tarver, and Daniel West. The new additions also include James Wood, a native of Oakville and member of the provincial under 21 team that also recently captured a national championship.

The McMaster men's rugby squad will return eight former Canadian junior team members (Dan Pletch, Mike Pletch, Make Blakey, Aaron Carpenter, Rob Ashwood, Spencer Fullerton, Steve Shortley and Shaun Allen and six members of the Canadian under 21 rugby world cup team.

The McMaster men's rugby team also announced that they will play
Ohio State University as a part of the McMaster Homecoming festivities on Oct. 4 at 2:30 p.m.

The rugby team is looking to defend the OUA Rugby Championship (Turner Trophy) in 2003.

The McMaster football team announced 32 new recruits, highlighted
by Adam Archibald (QB), Tom Flaxman (FB), Kyle Koch(OL), Eugene Boakye
(LB), Matt Hobbart (LB), Rob Serviss (WR), and Hamilton products Matt
Schonewille (OL), Dan Crosta (DL) and Chris Jankus (RB).

McMaster will return CIS first team all-star and CIS rushing leader, Kyle Pyear who ran for 1,227 yards on 187 carries. Also returning to McMaster are OUA all-stars Fabio Filice (OT), Dave Forde (OG), Michael Ray (place kicker), Colin Shanahan (DT), Kwame Aidoo (CB), Brandon Little (DB – half back) as well as second team all-stars; Vaughn Swart (WR), Mike Gow (DE), Manny Furtado (rush cover).

The McMaster team will be looking to replace CFL draftpicks Kojo Aidoo
(Edmonton), Ray Mariuz (Toronto) and Mike Botteril (Montreal).
