The Canadian women's soccer team opened the World University
Games in Daegu, Korea today.

They were defeated 3-1 against South Korea in the opening match of the 2003 Summer Universiade.

McMaster all-Canadian Megan Beckett scored the opening goal for the Canadian team with a free kick. The midfielder was tied for third in the OUA in scoring last season with seven goals.

The team also features McMaster soccer co-ordinator, and assistant women's soccer coach Lydia Vamos. Vamos is the head coach of the
provincial women's under 17 team that earned a silver medal at the
National Championship in Edmonton. Vamos was a member of the national
women's soccer team between 1989 and 1995. She is a four-time first
team all-Canadian at McMaster where she captained the team
to a gold medal in 1991 earning the MVP of the championship.

Team Canada plays the Republic of Ireland Friday afternoon. The top two teams in Pool A will advance to the quarterfinals, with the remaining teams battling for places nine to 11.
