The award is given to a member of the Hamilton community who best exemplifies leadership and volunteer involvement. The award is given by Hamilton Safe Communities, a not-for-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life in Hamilton.

George is the sixth recipient of this award; others are Sam Mercanti (CARSTAR); Bob Morrow (former mayor); Ron Foxcroft (Fluke Transport); John Mayberry (former CEO of Dofasco); and Jagoda Pike (Hamilton Spectator publisher).

In making the announcement, John Dolbec, CEO of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, noted that few people have moved the community forward as much as McMaster's president. “His considerable achievements and list of volunteer activities are staggering, to say the least,” said Dolbec. “What an inspiration it is to have someone of his calibre devote so much of his time to our community.”

In accepting the award, George said he was both privileged and humbled by the award. Noting that the award would be formally presented at a celebrity roast on April 27, he said he was open to help and suggestions from anyone who could help him sharpen his wit in preparation for the roast.
