Cross-country runner Jessica Pearo, who became the first female Marauder to win an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) gold medal on Saturday, has been named Canadian Interuniversity Sport's (CIS) female athlete of the week.

Pearo, a fourth-year kinesiology student from Richmond Hill, Ont., finished the five-kilometre championship race in a personal-best time of 17:00.04, a full 13 seconds ahead of her closest rival, Guelph all-Canadian Rachel Cliff. A three-time all-Canadian herself and the fifth-place finisher at last year's CIS meet, Pearo lifted the Marauders to second place in the women's team standings.

Pearo beat out former Olympic hockey gold-medalist Hayley Wickenheiser, currently playing for the University of Calgary, for the athlete of the week honour.

“I'm just absolutely thrilled for Jess, she ran a really smart, tactical race,” said Rory Sneyd, head coach of the cross country team. “She's put in a lot of hard work…things are looking great heading into CIS.”

Pearo and the cross-country team will now travel to the 2010 CIS Championship taking place in Sherbrooke, Que., on November 13.
