The McMaster community's patience and understanding are greatly appreciated as construction continues.

The Parking Automation project consists of several phases. The first phase includes the old zone numbers 3, 3NX (now called Lot I), zone 4 just below the Cootes Drive bridge (now called K) and zones 6 and 7 (now broken up into M, N, O and P). Security and Parking Services will be posting these maps online and new signage will be installed.

Phase 1 civil works are currently underway. Although new equipment is being installed over the next few months, the system will not be operational until spring 2008.

This system will be the first fully integrated system in North America, which means the gate machinery will work simultaneously with the business software package.

Future plans include a fully web-based interactive system that will enable users to apply for parking online as well as check their wait list status. All of these details will be made available to patrons in due course.

The new stadium underground lot and Ward Avenue will be installed after the Phase 1 lots. All of the other lots north of the Sterling Street entrance will be worked on in May 2008. Phase 2 will involve extensive civil works improvements, all of which are designed to improve the flow of traffic in and out of the campus.

Monthly permit holders will be issued transponders, consisting of a plastic tape affixed to the inside of your windshield. The gate will read the tape and automatically open for you to enter and exit.

Day parkers can push the button at the gate and receive a spitter ticket that will allow them to enter. The ticket must be validated by paying the appropriate fee at a pay machine before leaving the lot.

These machines will be located at various locations, including the white bus stops and the parking areas (Phase 1), the stadium parking area as well as lot locations, the McMaster University Student Centre and the David Braley Athletics Centre (Phase 2).

Pay machines will accept cash or credit cards to validate spitter tickets. These validated tickets must be fed into the gate machine on the way out to lift the arm. This system is the same as those used by airports and many municipal lots.

Every gate location will have a “talk-a-phone” and a camera system for 24/7 assistance. The McMaster community will be notified in advance before the system is put into effect next spring
