Kinesiology professor, McMaster alumnus take top awards

At the recent North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) conference in Kansas City, McMaster kinesiology professor Sue Inglis was awarded the prestigious Dr. Earle F. Zeigler Award. The Zeigler Award recognizes individuals for having made significant contributions to the field of sports management as well as to NASSM and is only given to a person once over the course of his or her career.

Why are they so interested in being inside instead of outside enjoying the summer weather? Patricia Diver, career coach, is leading the first in a series of alumni career guidance sessions, which will no doubt continue to grow in popularity as the word gets out - Mac cares about its grads.

Kelton takes on second term as head of Faculty of Health Sciences

In the past five years, McMaster's Faculty of Health Sciences has undergone tremendous growth in its dual mandates of education and research. Since 2001, student enrolment has doubled, and research funding is up 24 per cent to $98-million a year.

Two Canada Research Chairs for McMaster

The breadth and depth of McMaster's research capacity is evident in the latest announcement by the Canada Research Chairs program, awarding one new research chair to behavioural ecologist Sigal Balshine, and renewing Dr. Timothy Whelan's Canada Research Chair in Health Services Research in Cancer.

McMaster incoming rookies, Shawn Bench (St. Catherines, ON) and Jeremy Groenveld (Welland, ON) have been selected to represent Volleyball Canada on the Junior National Team. A total of 12 athletes plus 2 alternates have been selected as Junior National Team athletes for this year.

Mission to MAC welcomes new students

Remember those first days at Mac when you didn't know where to find the basics: food, fun or class locations? Or when you had no idea what a 'Marauder' is or 'MUSC' might be? Each year McMaster welcomes almost 5,000 incoming first year students, attracted to our beautiful campus from locations around the globe. Many of them will have the same questions on their minds as they cross McMasters threshold. Once again, the Alumni Association is making sure these new students feel part of the McMaster community even before they arrive.

Dr. Julia Abelson has been named director for the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis (CHEPA) effective September 1, 2006. John Kelton, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences, made the announcement today.

With a click, Mac’s new payroll system begins

It's called Mac VIP, and today is its birthday. The new payroll and human resources management system today produced the first pay for more than 450 hourly paid employees who make up the groups McMaster has referred to for many years as rolls 2 and 5. Between now and the Fall, the remaining 16 employee groups will be converted to the new system, from full-time faculty and staff, to visiting professors. When complete, over 6,000 employees and Faculty will be paid from the new system.

It’s good to be green

McMaster showed its colour again this year - green. Members of our campus community demonstrated their respect for the environment, when 930 participants signed up to take part in clean air commuting during National Environment Week (June 4 - 10). Sixty percent of the participants who stated that they normally drive to work, made a change to their commuting behaviour at least one day during the week. McMaster's efforts saved 19.1 tons of pollution (mainly carbon dioxide) from being pumped into the atmosphere.

Shoukri & Barber named to Premier’s Research and Innovation Council

Mamdouh Shoukri, vice-president of research and international affairs, and Doug Barber, distinguished professor-in-residence in the Faculty of Engineering and member of the Board of Governors, have been appointed to the Ontario Research and Innovation Council. Premier and Minister of Research and Innovation, Dalton McGuinty, made the announcement last week as part of his strategy to strengthen Ontario's innovative economy and to maximize the province's opportunities for growth and prosperity.

In memoriam of Jean Hodgins, wife of engineering founder

Jean Hodgins, wife of McMaster's first dean of engineering, John Willard (Jack) Hodgins, has passed away peacefully in Port Perry on July 2, 2006, in her 93rd year. Jean will be sadly missed by her daughter Susan Moss and her husband Brian of Oshawa and her two loving granddaughters Deborah and Heather Dolson.

For those of us who lack a green thumb, the fruits of our well-intentioned yet often inadequate labour are frequently trips to the garden centre to replace the plant we forgot to water. However, when Canadian farmers have an unlucky growing season the effects are much more severe.
