Volunteer profile: Janet DelseyFor National Volunteer Week (April 19 to 25), the Daily News has compiled a selection of stories to recognize volunteers across the McMaster community. McMaster has a rich community of volunteers that contribute their time on campus, in the Hamilton community, across Canada and even internationally. When Janet Delsey met four-year-old Avery Williams while vacationing in Punta Cana in 2002, she was immediately struck by the courage and strength in the young girl.

Collective bargaining at McMasterThe University's bargaining team will begin collective bargaining with CAW local 555 at the end of this week. CAW represents about 2200 support and technical staff at McMaster. Formal proposals will be exchanged Friday morning.

New chair for engineering physics, XCEEI director reappointedHarold Haugen has been appointed Chair of the Department of Engineering Physics and Rafik Loutfy has been reappointed as the Director of the Xerox Centre for Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Both appointments are effective July 1, 2009.

Four devastating hurricanes swept through Haiti six months ago. In their wake, hundreds of lives were lost and thousands were left homeless because of the unrelenting mudslides.

Betty Ann Levy, chair of the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour, has been a volunteer with the United Way for the past two years.

At 99 years of age, Ken Turner could be living out his golden years in relaxation. Instead, Turner has spent the last 6 years volunteering at the Bennett/Sekuler Vision & Cognitive Neuroscience Lab in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour, where he participates in a variety of experiments.

McMaster to acquire rare trench maps to build on its extensive collectionMcMaster University Library is soon to be home to one of the largest collections of World War I trench maps in the country after acquiring a significant collection from Peter Chasseaud, the world's leading expert in First World War military maps. The acquisition of more than 900 maps, funded by the Government of Canada, will triple the Library's trench map collection.
