An opera singer and the former governor of the Bank of Canada will each receive honorary
degrees at McMaster University's fall convocation ceremonies on Friday, Nov. 19 in the
Great Hall of Hamilton Place.

At the morning ceremony, degrees will be conferred on the graduating classes of the
DeGroote School of Business, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Social Sciences and
the Arts & Science program. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka will receive an honorary Doctor of
Letters degree. The morning ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m.

Pieczonka began her career at the Canadian Opera Company in 1988, and since then, she
has been acclaimed around the world. She will perform at the convocation, adding to the
celebratory mood as it will be at the same ceremony that Patrick Deane will be officially
installed as the University's 7th President and Vice-Chancellor. (Before 1950, McMaster
Presidents were called Chancellors.)

During the afternoon ceremony, degrees will be conferred on the graduating classes of the
Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Health Sciences. David
Dodge, former governor of the Bank of Canada, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws
degree. The afternoon convocation begins at 2:30 p.m.

Dodge has had a distinguished career in the federal public service. He was appointed to
the Bank of Canada in 2001, a position he held until his retirement in 2008.
